(Another letter by my husband’s grandfather to his wife in 1955. Emory is the grandfather, Bob is his brother and “Dad” is their father. They are driving the AlCan Highway in 1955. Emory has sent a letter home every day.)

I forgot to tell you one thing last night. When we got up in Dawson Creek we had a tire going down and the spare tire was down so the fellow that fixed both tires that charged 2.25 for them didn’t fix them at all but they seem to be fixed O.K. We also had the car greased there. Then this morning I told Bob “check the tires on your side” and sure enough it was down and the spare was too. So we went over to a garage and took out both tubes, gave them to the owner and bought two new tubes so now I guess our tire trouble is over — I hope.
We plan to get to Whitehorse tomorrow night and I think we will then go down to Valdez — Anchorage and Seward before we go to Fairbanks.
Bob is always the last one up and I’ve really got a kick out of Dad — you know how he has always said he gets up early and then stops early — we started doing that but the last few days he has wanted to stop early but he has started late. Today I was kidding him a little about it, so tonight while we were eating he said we should start out early tomorrow.
We stopped at a place today and walked a mile or two to see some “Hot Springs” and the water was so hot you couldn’t hold your hand in it. It is hard to believe it but you would think you were in a tropical place as ferns and all plants that you would find down south were growing there.
Dad just told me to tell you I found his glasses. Last night I got dressed and went down to mail your letter so I took the car keys and started looking for the glasses — I found them in the back seat.
It’s now 10:40 and the sun is still up but it should go down any minute now but Dad just went out and said it was good for another 30 minutes — Bob now just came in and said he was having one hell of a time to figure out just when to go to bed. The fellow that owns the hotel said all you do is go to bed when you get tired. I haven’t looked for any presents yet and don’t plan to until I get to Alaska. Guess that’s all for now Honey.
The letter I mailed yesterday should get to you about the time this one does as they told me it would not go until Monday.
